As Alberta began to boom in population a century ago, high birth rates translated into growth and good news for young communities in the province. Back 101 years ago, Calgary saw a 19 per cent increase in its birth rate year over year, while Edmonton saw a 28 per cent increase, a 1921 archived Calgary Herald article notes.
